Quad-GPU CrossfireX Support Expected In March
The current evolution of the hardware market is really funny, since a lot of products get released before they are properly tested, then called back for fixing issues, others are delayed, and others lack proper driver support. Anyway, don't expect me to give names, because today I only want to tell you about AMD's upcoming driver to support CrossfireX setups using triple or quad GPUs.
Unfortunately, the next Catalyst driver release, version 8.2, expected to become available around the 13th of February, will be the last ATI driver without support for triple and quad GPU setups. Anyway, sounds good to me, especially considering my "ancient", single X1950Pro videocard, but if you're one of the few that purchased 3 or 4 killer cards, hoping to play Crysis on insane quality settings this winter, well... you'll have to wait until March.
According to Godfrey Chang, AMD's Director of Marketing Platform technologies, the first driver with support for triple and quad GPUs could allow more than 300 percent scaling in some games really "loved" by the Crossfire X technology, such as Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 2142 and those based on the Source engine. Unfortunately, no word about Crysis, so we'll have to wait until mid-March to see the first reviews being published...
