Computer Storage Media

Published by warepin, on August 29th, 2011, in the categories: Hardware-related

The computer storage media is represented in our days by the hard drives. We tend to use solid-state drives as well or external hard drives or other types of storage devices, but the hard drive remains the main item where we store our personal and professional information. And because I don't want to speak about a certain product without presenting its technical specification (in this way you, our readers, can understand better how that product works), I have decided to present the Seagate Barracuda green hard drives. In fact, I have started to present a little bit of the features of this product in my previous articles, but I have plenty more, information taken directly from the site of the manufacturer, Seagate.com.

First of all, let me say something that I have never said in the previous articles where I have discussed about the Seagate hard drives; this is an eco friendly product, which has received the status of being a green product. In fact, if you look closely at the images presented in this article, you will see that this is indeed a green product. But let's also read some information, not only look at the images.

The I/O data transfer rate is of 600 MB/s. The unrecoverable read errors are of 1 in more than 10 millions (in fact, this number is way bigger). The reliability of the hard drive is of 750000 hours. The annual failure rate is of 0.34% and the power requested by this device in order to work is of 12V. The average idle power is of 4.5W and the average operating power is of 5.8W. Once again I have to say that the information are taken directly from the site the manufacturer, so you have to trust them. I did not take the information from sites that sell this type of hard drives, but directly from the site of manufacturer, Seagate.com.

Let's see what should be the environmental conditions and the ambient temperature in order to use this hard drive. It is considered that you can use the hard drive in harsh conditions, but I recommend to not try this. If you want to protect your computer and the information stored in your hard drive, you better not try to see if the computer runs okay in these conditions. The operating temperature is somewhere between 0°C - 60°C. You should not use your hard drive at temperatures lower than 0°C, neither at temperatures higher than 60°C. It is considered that the hard drive will be damaged if you will try to use it at -40°C or + 70°C. I believe that you can hardly breathe in those conditions, so I guess that you don't have too much time for running the computer, as long as you want to keep breathing. The operating shocks after which this hard drive can still function is of 80 Gs for 2 ms. Also, another important thing related to the operating temperature, when you move from a location with a certain temperature to another location where you will find other temperature, make sure that the difference of temperatures between those two rooms is not higher than 20°C per hour.

Computer Storage Measurement

Published by warepin, on August 28th, 2011, in the categories: Storage devices

The computer storage of a laptop computer or of a desktop computer (it doesn't matter) is represented by the hard drive or by the solid-state drive. But the information that are stored in here must have a limit. In this way, you cannot store in your computer more than 20 videos, let's say, or more than 100 photos. Of course these examples are only made to show you that you can store information on a hard drive or solid-state drive but only if you take into consideration certain limits.

The information that can be stored in a computer is measured by bites. Then we have megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. Today I would like to speak with you about the hard drive created by Seagate which is named Barracuda. I'm talking about the Barracuda green hard drive that allows you to save your time. The leading performance provided by Seagate combined with the SmartAlign technology deliver you a green product that is created to enhance your productivity.

Let's present the technical specifications of the Barracuda green SATA 2 TB hard drive. I'm sure that you are accustomed to see the technical specifications of a notebook computer more than seeing the specifications of the component that is inserted in that notebook. Well today, we are going to change that and present the details of a hard drive, in this way you will understand better what happens inside your hard drive and how hard drive actually works, because if you understand the components that create the hard drive and how the hard drive actually stores information, you will be able to understand better the functionality of this internal part of every computer.

I will review the model number ST2000DL003. The interface of this product is SATA 6 GB/s. The cache of the product is of 64 MB. The capacity is as I have said before of 2 TB. The areal density is 422 GB/in2. Now let's present the physical dimensions. On the site of the manufacturer they are presented in millimeters and in inches as well. I would present only the millimeters versions: the height of the Barracuda green product is up 26.1 mm, the width of 101.6 mm and the last is of 147.00 mm. The weight of the product is of 635g. Now let's present more information about the performance of this product. I will start with the spin speed, which is by default presented in rotations per minute or revolutions per minute and which in our case is of 5900 RPM. The sustained data transfer rate is 144 MB/s. The average latency is of 5.08 ms, the random read seek time is of 12 ms and the random write seek time is of 13 ms. I don't know if these technical details mean anything to you, but they definitely mean something to professionals. I will come back with more information related to the hard drives created by Seagate, because I see them as being some of the best in the whole world.

Desktop Computer Storage

Published by warepin, on August 25th, 2011, in the categories: Storage devices

A desktop computers storage is represented by the hard drive or recently by the solid-state drive. The solid-state drive allows you to store more information in a lower amount of GB. For example, you can buy a desktop computer that has 500 GB of solid-state drive where you will be able to store much more photos and videos than on a 500 GB hard disk drive desktop computer.

Today I have entered Seagate.com, the site of a very well known hard disk drive manufacturer. I will try to present the information related to the hard drives that this company creates. Among their services that are for home, for business and for enterprises, we can name the external storage devices, internal storage devices, home entertainment products, network attached storage, different services and accessories. I will enter the desktop storage category or subcategory (this is in fact a subcategory of the main category which is named For Business). And here we can find three types of Barracuda hard drives. I would like to make a compare is on between them, because this is how the manufacturer itself proceeds.

As long as you have a powerful desktop computer, why not get the best in terms of hard drives for your computer? The first type of Barracuda hard drive is the XT hard drive which has the capacity between 2 TB and 3 TB, the spin speed is of 7200 revolutions per minute, the drive size is of 3.5 and the interface is made using the SATA technology with 6 GB per second. What else can we say about this XT hard drive created by Seagate? I am pretty sure that you are interested in the annual failure rate of this product, which in our case is of 0.34% and in the amount of cache used by this product. This last feature is of 64 MB. Now let's present another Barracuda hard drive, which is most likely more affordable than the first one, because the storage capacity is from 160 GB to 1 TB. The speed of this hard drive is the same as in the previous case and the drive size exactly the same. The interface is just like the first and the annual failure rate, the same. The only thing that is different between this type of hard drive and the first one, which is destined mostly for professionals (no wonder this Seagate XT hard drive is included in the business category) is the fact that the cache has 8 MB, 16 MB and 32 MB in the case of this second type of hard drive.

And now last but not least I want to present the Barracuda green hard drives, which allow you to store information from 1.5 TB to 2 TB. The speed of the hard drive is of 5900 revolutions per minute and the cache of 64 MB. The rest of the characteristics are the same as the features presented earlier.

Computer Storage Backup Units

Published by warepin, on August 25th, 2011, in the categories: General information

The computer storage backup units are represented in most cases by the hard drive devices themselves. You have to do from time to time a backup of the information stored in your hard drive even if you use an external hard drive. Those information should be backed up also. This is available if you use a hard disk drive or a solid-state drive. But how can you do this without consuming some other parts of storage space in your hard drive?

If all that you do is to back up the data you have on your computer on that computer as well, in the computer will be ruined by some natural catastrophic event let's say, the information stored in the computer will be damaged as well. And in some cases the information will never be recovered. This is why you should preserve your information on CDs, DVDs and now Blu-ray discs. You can store your information not only in your hard drive, but also on CDs. You have to be sure that if you use that information daily to have the CD next to you every day. But if you use the information from time to time, it would be preferable to store this information on a CD or a DVD, instead of using the hard drive to store information that you don't use on a daily basis. And in the case of a catastrophic event, as I have said earlier, the information will be preserved. If the catastrophic event doesn't harm the CDs and DVDs that you have in your house or at your office as well.

To be certain that the information is never going to be destroyed, why not search for computer storage backup units online? I know that this may sound a little bit strange, but there are many people already who are using the services offered by the Cloud. This is a software program that allows you to store your personal information using a certain amount of space. For example, you can store multimedia documents or simply text files that together have less than 1 GB or less than 25 GB and so on. So you have a limit that you have to respect.

Let's present some financial information now. For example, I have entered the site named Carbonite.com and I have found out that for home and home office users, there is unlimited online backup, as long as you pay $59 per year per computer. The small businesses will have a backup plan that starts at $229 per year. You can benefit of a free trial if you want to see how this system works. I recommend to you to start with that free trial, because you don't know from the start if you are going to love this system or not. Plus, in order to have access to your personal information stored online, you have to be always connected to the Internet. When you want to listen to a music track that for example is stored in the Cloud, you must have immediate access to your piece of "online land".
