This rudimentary hard disk drive could only store about 5 MB and its dimensions were astounding in comparison to the little memory it actually held. The first hard drive that could store 2.52 GB was released by IBM as well in 1980, but it weighed about 250 kg and was as big as a refrigerator.
While researchers were trying to make the hard drives smaller floppy disks and magnetic tapes came along, replacing the old-fashioned punch cards and punch tapes and allowing information to circulate more easily, as the dimensions of both these means of storing it were a lot smaller and easier to handle, not to mention more reliable.
Slowly but surely the need for more storage space demanded its toll. It wasn’t long till in 1991 the 100 MB 2.5 inch hard drive came into existence. More technology breakthroughs paved the way for higher capacity hard drives, at lower space cost. Also, optical storage devices were invented, like the Compact Disk (CD) in 1980. From there, computer data storage was one step away from where it came to be today.
In the present day, if one would look at the history of computer data storage, he’d be amazed on how rudimentary the equipment was just a few years back. It was merely in 2002 when the limit of 137 GB of storage memory was reached. And in 2007 the first 1 terabyte hard drive was released - Hitachi GST.
Today, you can literally hold entire libraries in the palm of your hand. They can be stacked on a Blu-ray Disk, on an external hard-drive that can reach up to 3 terabytes or flash memory stick. With this much information lying around at every corner, who’d even bother with something so primitive like a punch card? But then again, with so much information around, so easily obtainable and easily transmittable, aren’t we getting a bit ahead of ourselves?

Adding Computer External Storage Memory

If you want to buy an external storage memory (HDD – Hard Disk Drive), then that is an excellent choice. And let me tell you why: when you buy a new PC you get only one HDD (from 80 to 360GB). It’s true that you can make two partitions, but if you get a virus somehow, you’re computer will slow down anyway, and if there is no solution to fix the viruses, then you have to install a clean copy of Windows (as I do).
And when you install it to get rid of the viruses you format both of the hard disks so to be sure that all the viruses are gone. But if you have an external hard drive, then your data (movies, music, pictures, games, etc.) won’t be affected.
So you will not lose anything. As a musician many times I made some mistakes like I didn’t saved my music, and when I got a virus, I had no choice, I had to format all of my hard drives. So I lost my music and I had to start all over again working on them. If I had an external hard drive, then all of my music would be saved. But unfortunately I don’t have an external HDD. Oh, and I forgot to mention one of the most important characteristic about it: you can take it with you anywhere you want. You don’t have to use screw drivers or anything.
The external Hard Disk Drive sometimes is connected through USB, and in my opinion that’s the best way to connect it with your PC. It’s really fast, and the chances to be destroyed or something are minimal. These external storage memories aren’t really expensive. For example a 1 TB (1024 GB) Toshiba Canvio external hard drive costs $99. And that is really cheap. Just think about how many movies or Blu-ray movies can you store on that hard drive. Or how many hours of music could you store. Although, if you have a flash drive (or memory stick) with at least 16 GB memory is better than nothing, because you can save temporarily your data, but to be honest 16 GB is not a lot of space.
Let me tell you what would I do if I get an external 1 TB HDD: I would re-partition my internal hard drives, and on my PC I would keep only the basic software’s. And the other things like movies music, etc.
I would copy to the external HDD. So my computer won’t slow down because of the lack of space. If you want to buy an external HDD then you should really check the RPM (rotation per minute), the capacity (GB/TB), and the connectivity (USB). To be honest right now I could really use an external hard disk drive. I have some movies and music that I really do not want to lose. I think I go to the store now and buy one. Yes, I really need it.
