Laptop Storage Devices

There are different types of hard drives, such as the hard disk ones and the solid state drive ones. The solid state drives are considered to be better than the hard disk drives because the SSDs are made out of a single “piece” and they do not contain any moving parts. In the case of a physical shock, certain pieces from the hard disks might break and that could result in data loss. That can be problematic in case the hard drive contains important data. Many people do not like the Solid State Drives because they are more expensive than the hard disk drives and because they are not able to store as much data as the HDDs.

Each laptop contains an optical drive because one of the best means of transferring data is via a CD or a DVD. It can be much more convenient to watch a movie or to listen to music directly from the optical disc than to copy the data on to the hard drive. Playing the data from the optical disc will assure a larger empty space on the hard drive, which could be used for storing more important data. More and more laptop and desktop computers use the Blu-Ray drives since this type of disc is starting to gain popularity. The Blu-Ray is able to store 25GB of data, whereas the DVDs can store only 4.5GB.

More desktop and portable computers are starting to use the external drives as well. The external drives work just like the internal ones, the only difference being that they connect to the computer via the USB, Firewire or Esata ports. The problem when using the external hard drive is that the transfer speed between them and the internal hard drives can be quite slow.
The USB flash drives are very popular as well because they represent a simple solution for storing and transferring data. They are small, lightweight, and they can easily be connected to the PC via the USB slot. These are the main laptop storage devices.
Computer Hardware

The motherboard contains certain circuits which allow the other components to connect to it, and which allows a communication between the motherboard and all the components. The components which are inserted into the motherboard are the processor, the RAM memory, the graphics card, and the audio card. The processor is the brain of the computer because it deals with all the operations the computer has to make. He will process all the information and will make sure that the information is properly transmitted to all the other components. There are different types of components, made by different brands, but the most important brands are Intel and AMD, as they hold the majority in this domain.

The memory is very important as well because the more memory a computer has the better it will be when it comes to multitasking. The memory ranges as well, in speed, in capacity and so on. In the case of the computer memory, there are far more brands than in the case of the processors and this is a good thing because there is competition and each company wants to create the best product. The graphics card is important because thanks to it you get to see the data on the monitor. Each computer has a graphics card; some of them are integrated whereas some are external. The integrated ones are capable of producing a very limited performance, suitable only for the most basic tasks, whereas the external ones are suitable mostly for gaming. In the case of the graphic cards, the two leading brands are ATI and nVidia.

The sound card is similar to the graphics card in the sense that it can be integrated or external. Just like in the case of the graphics card, an external card will be able to produce a superior performance. The external sound cards are suitable for the people who would like to listen to music of a higher clarity. Last but not least is the hard drive, the component on which all the data is stored on including the operating system. These are the main components of a computer hardware.

There are different components which form the computer hardware and in what follows I am going to present them to you. It is only suitable to start with the beginning and that should be the motherboard. The motherboard is the component on which all the other components connect. In order to make the connection between all the components, the motherboard uses different integrated circuits. It is important to know that certain components are only compatible with certain motherboards, and in many cases a change of the components might require a change of the motherboard as well.

One of the most important components which connects to the motherboard is the “brain of the computer”, which is the processor. It can also be called the CPU or the central processing unit. This component makes all the proper calculations which assure that the computer works in a proper manner. The processor communicates with all the other components as well and that is done through the chipset. The CPU connects to the chipset which then connects to the motherboard.

Another important component of each computer is the memory. The RAM or Random Access Memory will store all the data which is provided by the processor, motherboard, video card, and so on. This data is lost as soon as the computer is reset. It is advisable to have as much memory on the computer as possible because the more RAM you have the more data it will be able to store and the better the computer will work.
The video card is an important component as well because it creates the output for the computer monitor. Every computer has a video card, whether an integrated one which is included in the motherboard, or an external one which connects to the motherboard. The external ones are able to produce a much better performance than the integrated ones and because of this they are suitable mostly for gaming computers. The hard drive is the component which stores all the computer data, which is somewhat similar to the RAM, the difference being that the data is kept even after the computer is reset.
Computer Hardware

The hardware of the personal computer represents the total of the computer components. The computer hardware represents the physical parts of the computer, the ones that you can touch. On the other hand the software of the computer represents the programs which are installed on the PC, and these ones can not be touched of course. There are various components which the computer hardware contains and in what follows I am going to present you these components.
I will start with the motherboard, as this is the component on which all the other components are located with very few exceptions. The motherboard is a large rectangular board which has various integrated circuits on it and through these circuits the other components are connected to it. One of the most important components which connect to the motherboard is the central processing unit, or the CPU; you might also know it by the name of processor.
The processor is responsible for performing most of the calculations which are required in order for the computer to be able to function properly. This is why the central processing unit is also known as the “brain” of the computer. The processor will be able to connect with all the other components of the computers with the aid of the chip set.

The memory of the computer is extremely important as well. Just like the processor, the Random Access Memory, or RAM for short, connects on the motherboard. The RAM stores all the running processes an the operating system, which means that it can be compared with a hard drive, and I am going to talk about this later, but which loses all the data at a reset of the computer. There are many types of RAMs and I should tell you that the more memory a PC has the better it is.

The hard drive is the component on which the data is stored including all the programs and files such as movies, audio ones, and so on. The more bytes the hard disk has the more memory it can store. There are also external memory devices such as USB flash drives and optical discs but these do not belong in the hardware category but in the accessories one. The graphics card is important as well because it produces the output for the computer monitor.
The more advanced graphic cards are usually used for gaming and when using programs which are very demanding. The computer also contains the power supply, an underrated component but a very effective and important one. The power supply supplies power to all the other components located inside the computer and as you can tell if it doesn’t work well the computer will not start.
Examples Of Computer Storage

There are also different types of hard drive, with different types of interfaces. A more recent type of hard drive is the Solid State Drive which is much more durable than the regular hard drive and which is way faster than the hard disk drive. The hard disk has many different parts which in case of physical shock can get damaged and a direct consequence of that could be the loss of data. This can be troublesome especially if the data you have on the computer is important. The Solid State Drives on the other hand are made out of a single unit and they are much more durable.

Besides the hard drive there are other computer storage devices which have the same purpose of storing data, only that they are external. The external storage devices are not able to store as much data as the hard drive with the exception of the external hard drive, which is basically an internal hard drive which is kept in a rack and which connects to the PC via the USB port. The more common external storage devices are the optical drives and discs such as the DVDs, CDs, Blu-Ray, and the ones which are no longer used such as the floppy disks and the ZIP disks.

These optical discs and drives usually store smaller amounts of data, the amount getting bigger and bigger with each new apparition. The CDs can store 700MB, the DVDs 4.5GB and the Blu-Ray can store 25GB. The main problem with the optical discs is the fact that they can not be written more than once, but even so they are extremely popular, as people use them for writing music, or movies, and even games. The USB flash drives represent another category of computer storage devices and their main characteristics is the fact that they are very small, they can store large amounts of data, and that they can be used more than once.
