Nowadays having a computer in your home is crucial. It keeps us connected with everything in the world. If you have a computer you don’t need other things like a phone, a cell phone or a TV. If you want to watch TV you go online and you search free TV. Networks have online all the programs you watch on a TV. If you want to talk to a friend, you login into Yahoo or other application like this one and you can talk to anyone anywhere in the world. And most important it is free of charge. Also, you can get a video reception if you have a web cam.

Today, laptops have become very popular. They are easy to use just like a normal computer but the important thing is that they are very practical. They don’t require that much space to deposit and you don’t have to worry that you don’t have the necessary space for it. Also, it is very useful when you go on a ride because it has a battery that allows you to use it for 3 or 4 hours depending on the model.



But, if you are a traditional man and you want a normal computer you can go and buy one. Some people prefer to buy a computer that is whole from the beginning. It has warranty for the whole thing and if it breaks something you can go to the store’s service where you bought it from. It is not that much of a trouble for you and you don’t really know what it has inside. If you break the warranty and you want to upgrade a component you have to bring to the service, pay a fee and they will upgrade it for you.

For those who don’t know you can build a computer with custom hardware. You just have to buy the components separately. Of course, you shouldn’t do this on your own if you don’t know which the best components are. You have to know of course if the components you buy are compatible with each other and if you will have an advanced computer. For this you need a friend who knows about computers or if you really are interested in an advanced computer you can hire someone who does.



So, if you want to build a computer with custom hardware you will need: the main board which is the most important component because this makes the connections between the rest of the components; the video card which allows you to watch 3D movies if you are interested in this kind of movies and play advanced games; the RAM memory which is important because it determines the speed of your computer; the processor is important as well because it determines the computer’s frequency; at last but not least you have to buy a monitor. This one is important too because otherwise we won’t be able to see anything. These are the major components of a computer and if you really want an advanced one you should consider asking someone for help if you are not into this type of technology. In any case, what you buy today and is considered to be very advanced, tomorrow it might be less advanced. And this is because technology evolves and companies upgrade every day the components making them better and better. This is the way things evolve and we must evolve with them.

If you want to buy an external storage memory (HDD – Hard Disk Drive), then that is an excellent choice. And let me tell you why: when you buy a new PC you get only one HDD (from 80 to 360GB). It’s true that you can make two partitions, but if you get a virus somehow, you’re computer will slow down anyway, and if there is no solution to fix the viruses, then you have to install a clean copy of Windows (as I do).

And when you install it to get rid of the viruses you format both of the hard disks so to be sure that all the viruses are gone. But if you have an external hard drive, then your data (movies, music, pictures, games, etc.) won’t be affected.

So you will not lose anything. As a musician many times I made some mistakes like I didn’t saved my music, and when I got a virus, I had no choice, I had to format all of my hard drives. So I lost my music and I had to start all over again working on them. If I had an external hard drive, then all of my music would be saved. But unfortunately I don’t have an external HDD. Oh, and I forgot to mention one of the most important characteristic about it: you can take it with you anywhere you want. You don’t have to use screw drivers or anything.



The external Hard Disk Drive sometimes is connected through USB, and in my opinion that’s the best way to connect it with your PC. It’s really fast, and the chances to be destroyed or something are minimal. These external storage memories aren’t really expensive. For example a 1 TB (1024 GB) Toshiba Canvio external hard drive costs $99. And that is really cheap. Just think about how many movies or Blu-ray movies can you store on that hard drive. Or how many hours of music could you store. Although, if you have a flash drive (or memory stick) with at least 16 GB memory is better than nothing, because you can save temporarily your data, but to be honest 16 GB is not a lot of space.

Let me tell you what would I do if I get an external 1 TB HDD: I would re-partition my internal hard drives, and on my PC I would keep only the basic software’s. And the other things like movies music, etc.



I would copy to the external HDD. So my computer won’t slow down because of the lack of space. If you want to buy an external HDD then you should really check the RPM (rotation per minute), the capacity (GB/TB), and the connectivity (USB). To be honest right now I could really use an external hard disk drive. I have some movies and music that I really do not want to lose. I think I go to the store now and buy one. Yes, I really need it.

The processor is also considered to be the brain of the computer because it is responsible for all the computing on a computer. The processor will make the connection with all the other components through the motherboard which is also called the main board. The motherboard is the component on which all the other components are connected. The memory of the computer is connected on the motherboard as well. The memory of the computer will also make the PC run much faster. The more memory the computer has the better it will run. The graphics card will create a much better image for the computer, and thanks to it you will be able to play certain games and so on. There are two types of graphics cards: integrated and dedicated, the dedicated one being much better because it has a memory of its own. The hard drive is the component on which all the computer data is located, such as multimedia files, certain software programs, the operating system, and so on.



Even the optical discs are considered hardware. If you buy a game, the disc on which the game is located it is hardware whereas the game itself, the application which you install on the computer is a software program because you can not touch it. In close relation with the optical discs are the optical drives such as the CD-ROMs, and the DVD-ROMs. It seems that the external storage devices are becoming more and more popular in the recent years.



The USB Flash drives, and the Solid State Disks and Drives are more and more popular because they have much more benefits than the optical drives. The USB Flash Drives can store large amounts of data, even more than some internal hard drives can and that is a great advantage. The USB Flash drives can be written more than once and as a result they are better than the optical discs as well. This was my information on the computer hardware.

The RAM stores all the running processes and the operating system while the computer is turned on, but which loses all the data as soon as the computer is resented. There are many types of memory and I should tell you that the more memory a computer has the better it will work.



The hard drive is another useful component of the computer. It is somewhat similar to the RAM, meaning that it also stores the data, only a different kind. The hard drive is non-volatile which means that the information remains on it permanently until it is deleted by the user. Like I said, in the case of the RAM, the data will be deleted when the computer is shut down. The size of the hard drive dictates the amount of information the computer is able to accumulate. The hard drive contains all the information including the software programs. There are numerous types of hard drives, such as hard disks, solid state drives, each with their own pros and cons.

The computer hardware is extremely important because the hardware is the sum of all the components which the computer contains. The computer hardware represents the hard part of the computer, the part which can be touched, whereas the software represents the programs which are installed on the hard drive in order for the computer to be able to work properly. There are different components which compose the hardware, each of them being very important. In the case of the computer memory, there are far more brands than in the case of the processors and this is a good thing because there is competition and each company wants to create the best product. The graphics card is important because thanks to it you get to see the data on the monitor. Each computer has a graphics card; some of them are integrated whereas some are external. The integrated ones are capable of producing a very limited performance, suitable only for the most basic tasks, whereas the external ones are suitable mostly for gaming. In the case of the graphic cards, the two leading brands are ATI and nVidia.



The sound card is similar to the graphics card in the sense that it can be integrated or external. Just like in the case of the graphics card, an external card will be able to produce a superior performance. The external sound cards are suitable for the people who would like to listen to music of a higher clarity. Last but not least is the hard drive, the component on which all the data is stored on including the operating system. These are the main components of a computer hardware.
