AMD - Beyond Octa-Core!?!
No matter if your old single core CPU is enough for needs, and probably a good part of today's home users that aren't into gaming won't need a multi-core in the coming years, the multi-core madness goes on at full speed, and it's not only Intel or AMD's fault. Programmers are no longer really interested in code optimization, so system requirements of most applications are going higher with each new version, and I am talking especially about games here, but it also applies to usual programs, such as Web browsers, unfortunately. Now, believe it or not, AMD is already looking beyond the 8-core barrier!

Currently, AMD's processors to feature eight cores are expected to arrive in 2009, but the 45nm quad-core Shanghai is due in the second half of 2008. The Montreal octa-core is expected to become available with the new socket G3 platform in 2009, if everything goes as planned, but the interesting part is that AMD already seems to have plans on going beyond the 8-core barrier.
Unfortunately, while saying that data centers are going to need more than 8-core CPUs and the plans are to develop such solutions, AMD also decreases its workforce by 10 percent, so this is going to be a very tough challenge for them - setting a roadmap, then having less human resources, yet keeping up with the initial plan...
