ATI All-in-Wonder Resurrected

Good news for HD fans! AMD has finally decided to bring back the good ol’ All-in-Wonder series, but this time we’re talking about integrated high-definition goodness. Here’s ATI All-in-Wonder HD!

Unfortunately, the new AIW card is not based on the new R700 family. It is derived from the RV635 (HD 3650) core made in 55nm technology. However, it is 100% PCI-Express 2.0 compatible and comes with 120 stream processors. The core is clocked at 725MHz, while the included DDR2 memory runs at 600MHz, being paired with a 128-bit memory interface.

A decent 3D accelerator, but the AIW we know concentrates more on the multimedia side. The new AIW makes no exception, providing support for analog (NTSC), digital/HDTV (ATSC) and unencrypted digital cable (ClearQAM) signals with time shifting functionality. Tuner capabilities aside, the card is capable of receiving FM radio station signals as well.

More features include the usual coaxial port, plus a single dual-link DVI and an HDMI port capable of video and a 5.1 channel digital surround audio signals. As a bonus, the ATI AIW HD will include an Accessory Kit which gives additional connectivity options, but this one might be sold separately.

Hopefully, ATI will introduce some R700-based AIW in the near feature, also providing some support for the new display port. The AMD/ATI press release mentions that Diamond Multimedia and VisionTek should be first to start selling these in late July with a price tag of US $199.

Asus Eee Stick

It seems AsusTek won't stop its assault on all areas of the computing world, and I wouldn't be amazed to see them showing up with some Eee Phone in a year or two. Anyway, there are other things to be released until then, and I think a game controller to get together with the Asus Eee Box is a pretty neat idea. Leaving the idea aside, what seems to be the upcoming game controller looks a bit strange to me, but let's see what is supposed to be known about it, since Asus didn't make any official statement about this whole deal yet, shall we?

Asus Eee Stick

The Asus Eee Stick GMC-1 is more than just a game controller, being a set of two pieces, one for left hand, and one for the right hand(anyway, I am sure that left handed people can use them too, by switching one with another), coming together with a USB dongle, a quick start guide and a support CD.

This is all according to a filing of Asustek with FCC, so no pricing and shipping details have been made public yet. If these controllers are going to be available separately, or bundled with Asus graphics card, maybe even with Eee PCs...so many questions, so many mysteries!

These being said, I guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks to see the Asus Eee Stick on the market, but I hope it's going to be worth it!

It’s Legit: R700 Beats GTX280

Published by Bogdan Alex, on June 25th, 2008, in the categories: Video Cards

Now that ATI’s HD 4870 is here, the situation seems to be getting nasty for NVIDIA. ATI’s got cheap and pretty fast cards, while NVIDIA has to keep up by lowering prices for some of the older cards. Additionally, the green guys have to cope with the upcoming R700 (4870X2) card from ATI. I guess you already heard rumors regarding the superiority of ATI’s flagship card over NVIDIA’s GTX 280, but now everything just got official.

Fudzilla had the chance to talk a bit with Vice President of ATI's graphics marketing, Matt Skynner and Vice President of GPU sales John Byrne who were in the position to confirm that ATI is very confident that its upcoming dual chip R700 will beat Geforce 280 GTX performance.

ATI has done some internal research and it turns out that their dual RV770 card will end up faster than the fastest Geforce GTX 280 card. I don’t know if ATI is showing too much self confidence here, but at least they are finally back on track. NVIDIA is definitely going to have some tough times, but there’s hope for the greenies: the GTX 200 family could be getting the GDDR5 upgrade pretty soon and this might even things.

Skynner and Byrne have also confirmed that the R700 is ready to enter the mass production phase, and the only thing that made ATI schedule its release for August was the driver development. Apparently, ATI has learned from past mistakes. Additionally, the two officials were able to provide some info on ATI’s next gen GPUs. The high end R800 will once again be dual chip, and we might see some quad-chip architectures in a couple of years.

Fudzilla further reports that ATI has decided that performance per watt is very important and it wants to continue to make a very fast mainstream / performance chips and use two of them for the high end card. This is the way where the company wants to go as this makes more financial sense.

Nokia Buys Symbian

Published by Codrut Nistor, on June 24th, 2008, in the categories: News

Nokia, already the world's largest mobile phone maker, decided to strengthen its position on the market. How? Well, since they are already leading the mobile hardware market, they decided to get a good piece of the software cake, and who else could have made a better target than Symbian? Fortunately, there's more than just Symbian when it comes to mobile operating systems. I have nothing against Nokia, even my mobile is one of their phones, but monopoly is not good, so here comes the story...

Nokia is expected to pay about $411 million for the remaining 52% Symbian Limited shares it doesn't have already, and since Sony Ericsson, Ericsson, Panasonic and Siemens already accepted, we can say that Nokia is in control already, because that would be about 91% of the company. Samsung Electronics still has to accept the offer.

According to Dick Komiyama, Sony Ericsson's president, "The complete, consistent platform that the Foundation plans to provide will allow manufacturers to focus on their unique differentiation at a device level. Sony Ericsson believes that the unified Symbian Foundation platform will greatly simplify the world for handset manufacturers, operators and developers, enabling greater innovation in services and applications to the benefit of consumers everywhere."

The transaction is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter, being subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. Once closed, all Symbian employees will be Nokia employees, and the mobile market will probably see another significant player disappearing from the scene...

ATI Radeon HD 4870

Published by Bogdan Alex, on June 24th, 2008, in the categories: Video Cards

Radeon HD 4870 will officially be launched tomorrow and. from what several sites report. It looks like this card is going to be up to 30% faster, while still cheaper than the 3870X2.

Apparently, the GDDR5 memory found on the 4870 model works at 900MHz basic frequency. However, the GDDR5 memories will benefit from the quad data rate architecture that results into an impressive bandwidth and speed of 3600MHz effectively. The 512Mb GDDR5 chips that ATI implemented in the new 4800 family have 3.6GB/s throughput or double what would GDDR 3 or 4 have at the same 900MHz speed.

The Radeon HD 4870 is going to primarily ship with 512MB onboard, amounting to eight 512Mbit chips. Later on, GPU integrators will be adding 1GB GDDR5 or as much as sixteen memory chips, but this will probably have to wait some more, as GDDR5 module availability suffers from early shortages.

Extrapolating what we know about the 4870 and the already available 4850 model, Fudzilla came to the conclusion that the 4870 will end up with almost twice as much bandwidth than the 4850, meaning around 115GB/s in total. Not to mention that 4870 and the entire 4800 family still supports 7.1 audio acceleration.
